The Chartered Institute of Taxation (CIOT) are the leading professionals in the United Kingdom focusing exclusively on taxation. Membership requires achieving a pass in the Chartered Tax Advisor (CTA) exams held every May and November, together with the ability to demonstrate three year’s relevant recent professional experience.
CTA Syllabus
Most trainees would complete the modular seven exams in 2 to 3 years.
There are four papers:
One Awareness paper – you will be required to choose 3 from the following 5 (the Awareness modules must not be the same as the corresponding Advanced Technical papers).
- Taxation of Individuals
- Inheritance Tax, Trusts & Estates
- Taxation of Unincorporated Business
- VAT including Stamp Taxes
- Corporation Tax
Two Advanced Technical papers - you will be required to choose 2 from the following 7 (the Advanced Taxation papers chosen must not be the same as the corresponding Awareness modules.
- Taxation of Individuals
- Inheritance Tax, Trusts & Estates
- Taxation of Owner-Managed Businesses
- Domestic Indirect Taxation
- Cross-Border Indirect Taxation
- Taxation of Major Corporates
- Human Capital Taxes
One Application and Professional Skills paper - you will be required to choose 1 from the following 6.
- Taxation of Individuals
- Inheritance Tax, Trusts & Estates
- Taxation of Owner-Managed Businesses
- VAT & other Indirect Taxes
- Taxation of Larger Companies & Groups
- Human Capital Taxes
In addition to the four examination papers, there are three compulsory computer-based exams:
- Law
- Professional Responsibilities & Ethics
